April Refuge Refresh - The Benefit of Tax Season
(You can access the actual email with formatting and images HERE).
Hi Refuge friends,
I hope you’re doing well. I don’t know about you, but I am SO THANKFUL that tax season is over! Maybe you don’t have to worry about tax season. If so, congratulations—I envy you! The one good thing I can appreciate is that it’s good to review our finances and decisions from last year and think intentionally about how we’ll proceed this year. For Priscilla and I, there are some things we’ll keep doing and some things that we definitely need to change! If we don’t take the time for self-assessment every now and then, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and hinder progress. It’s a great lesson for financial strategy but it also applies well to life in general, if you think about it. Here’s to living with a focus on growth and intentionality the rest of the year!
Have a great day and don’t hesitate to reach out if I can help in any way!
-Tim

Why did the IRS audit Sherlock Holmes so many times?
He always had a suspicious number of deductions. 😂

What’s the Difference?
Qualified funds vs. Non-qualified funds
If you’ve met with a financial advisor or moved your money to different financial vehicles, you’ve probably heard these terms. Here’s the what they mean:
Qualified funds: Money in accounts that receive tax advantages, meaning taxes are either deferred or reduced based on specific IRS rules. (Think retirement accounts like 401(k)s, IRAs, etc.)
Non-qualified funds: Money in accounts without special tax advantages, where earnings may be taxed as they occur or when gains are realized. (Think checking & savings accounts, most CDs, etc.)
Key Definition:
Original Medicare
The federal health insurance program made up of Part A (hospital coverage) and Part B (medical coverage) that helps pay for many healthcare services. It allows you to see any provider that accepts Medicare, but it does not include most prescription drug coverage and leaves most people exposed to high out-of-pocket costs. For those reasons, most people add additional coverage like Prescription Coverage (Part D), Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage (Part C).
Think about it…
You spend years building your career, saving for a home, and creating a life you love. Have you thought about how you’ll protect that life and legacy for those you care about? Life insurance is one of the simplest ways to make sure the life you’ve built continues to support the people you love, even if you’re not here.
